Take the First Step in Finding Your Dream Career
There comes a time in everyone’s life when you wonder about career choices to make and whether your decision will be the right one. While some people are happy with their choices, for the rest of us, deciphering a path may not be that easy.

According to psychologist Seema Hingorrany, figuring one’s career path is crucial. “Many students take up career streams that they may not really like due to parental and societal pressures. As a result they get frustrated and depressed with their lives,” she says. Seema gives an example of a student (Reshma, name changed) who came to her because she felt ‘stuck’ in life. Her parents had forced her to take up the study of science after Standard X. Having completed her schooling with the subjects, she was not willing to pursue further studies at college in the same stream.

“If you are not clear about what you want to do in life then take up an aptitude test and assess your interests and strong areas. Such tests help you know your personality type and give a go-ahead in the right direction for your career,” explains Seema, adding, “Parents should also understand that forcing a career on children may not help them,” says Seema.

Reshma was lucky as she finally opted for a career in a creative field after she assessed her strength through an aptitude test. But for those who have already completed their studies and started working, but are still unhappy, there is no need to feel guilty. There is always opportunity to change your career stream at any point of life.

“I did a post graduation course in public relations and always thought that this was the goal of my life. Reality dawned on me when I started working,” says Rashmi Singh (26). “Just trying to get hold of journalists to convey the clients’ brief hurt my self worth and I started feeling that if I have the thinking ability and writing skills, I could be a journalist too,” she states. Today Rashmi is happy, having found her true calling.
So, if you are stuck with a wrong career choice don’t be frightened to make a change. Instead, take the time to introspect, analyse your thoughts and feelings and see if where you are matches up to visuals of where you want to be. If it does, its ok, and if it doesn’t then don’t be afraid to ask yourself why. There’s no point dragging on with things just because it seems safe to do so.
