Aptitude Test Free Online Aptitude Test Career Aptitude Test

Take the First Step in Finding Your Dream Career
There comes a time in everyone’s life when you wonder about career choices to make and whether your decision will be the right one. While some people are happy with their choices, for the rest of us, deciphering a path may not be that easy.

According to psychologist Seema Hingorrany, figuring one’s career path is crucial. “Many students take up career streams that they may not really like due to parental and societal pressures. As a result they get frustrated and depressed with their lives,” she says. Seema gives an example of a student (Reshma, name changed) who came to her because she felt ‘stuck’ in life. Her parents had forced her to take up the study of science after Standard X. Having completed her schooling with the subjects, she was not willing to pursue further studies at college in the same stream.

“If you are not clear about what you want to do in life then take up an aptitude test and assess your interests and strong areas. Such tests help you know your personality type and give a go-ahead in the right direction for your career,” explains Seema, adding, “Parents should also understand that forcing a career on children may not help them,” says Seema.

Reshma was lucky as she finally opted for a career in a creative field after she assessed her strength through an aptitude test. But for those who have already completed their studies and started working, but are still unhappy, there is no need to feel guilty. There is always opportunity to change your career stream at any point of life.

“I did a post graduation course in public relations and always thought that this was the goal of my life. Reality dawned on me when I started working,” says Rashmi Singh (26). “Just trying to get hold of journalists to convey the clients’ brief hurt my self worth and I started feeling that if I have the thinking ability and writing skills, I could be a journalist too,” she states. Today Rashmi is happy, having found her true calling.
So, if you are stuck with a wrong career choice don’t be frightened to make a change. Instead, take the time to introspect, analyse your thoughts and feelings and see if where you are matches up to visuals of where you want to be. If it does, its ok, and if it doesn’t then don’t be afraid to ask yourself why. There’s no point dragging on with things just because it seems safe to do so.

CAT 2008: A comparative study of sections, topics

CAT has always lived up to its expectations of being the most uncertain examination held in India, and come November and all the MBA aspirants in the nation will be set to face the CAT-astrophic storm of 2008. And it’s not always the changing pattern that students face as the demonstration of CAT-astrophy.

For instance, CAT 2007 did not surprise the takers with its pattern, though it’s Quantitative and Verbal sections certainly gave the test takers a hard time.CAT 2007 was characterised by a tough Quantitative section, a lengthier (over 180 words per question) Verbal section and the only life saver in the form of DI section.

The test security was unbeatable with four sets of question papers having answer options jumbled even for the same questions in all the four sets. That is, if your answer in Series 111 for a particular Quant question was Option 4, the answer for the same question in Series 222, 333 and 444 may not be the same (ie Option 4).
This was a proactive step taken by the exam setters because, since CAT 2006, students are getting more than two minutes per question (considering the fact that no one attempts all the questions) increasing the possibility of copying.

To help this year’s test takers crack CAT 2008, experts from TCYonline.com have analysed the last 4 CATs in the deepest possible detail. Let’s analyse the components one by one:

CAT Quantitative Section
This section was the toughest of all. The topic wise break-up of the Quantitative section is as follows:

cat eams

cat eams

theory. Surprisingly, Higher Math occurred second as regards the share in total number of questions. A comparison of the CAT 2007 with the previous 4 CATs (Chart No 2) shows that Number Theory and Geometry are becoming hot favourites of the exam setters. On the other hand the number of Area/Volume questions has fallen drastically since last CAT.

CAT Verbal Section
Though seemed similar from the outset, CAT 2007 verbal was much different from CAT 2006. The return of Grammar; a new creative face of vocabulary under the guise of sentence completion and lengthier Para jumbles as compared to the earlier versions. An overview of CAT 2007 verbal is given below:
CAT

CAT

difficult with the number of RC passages going up from 12 in CAT 2006 to 15 this year and the number of RC questions going down from 15 in CAT 2006 to 12 this year.

Para Jumbles took the RC avatar with long paragraphs in place of sentences as jumbled parts. A careful comparison ofCAT 2007 with the past 4 CATs (Chart No 4) shows that RC is the hot favourite of the verbal exam setters. On the other hand, Para Jumbles appeared as an important ingredient of CAT only after CAT 2004.

CAT

CAT

CAT DI Section
This was the only scoring section in the CAT 2007. The questions were easier but trickier as compared to CAT 2006. Data Sufficiency appeared in this section after a long absence. But the most important fact is that Logical reasoning is getting more and more preference of the test takers (see Chart No 5). Moreover, it is retaining the trend since CAT 2005.

Ten tips to ace CAT

There’s no fixed formula to ace CAT.

However, a combination of strategy, planning and implementation should help you score well in this test.

Here are my 10 tips for helping you harness your potential.
1. CAT is a pseudo standardised test

This means that, even though you cannot predict the exact pattern of questions like you can with GRE, you can still predict the answer pattern — a net total of about 60 to 65 marks with an equitable distribution in all three sections of the paper will get you calls from most institutions.

Once you realise this, you will find your workload reduced by a huge amount. Your task, as emphasised by all CAT preparation centres, is to attempt the 60 to 70 easiest possible questions out of the 120 to 150 odd questions that are put to you. You must work to this pattern if you want to do well in CAT.
ii. The identification of easy questions is a difficult task and comes only after practice. Depending on a person’s level of ease with the topics, the amount of preparation required may vary. However, you should try to leverage your strengths to the optimum. In the process, however, don’t forget clearing cut-offs is essential to getting calls; doing well in one section and not clearing the cut-off in another will not help.

iii. CAT is not a test to prove your mettle in specific subjects; you need to prove your overall ability.
*
Why English Usage is so important

iv. Most of you must have already started giving mock tests; this is the only way to figure out how you will fare at the national level. There is no need to panic if you are not able to match your expectations in the mock CAT tests; look at every test as a learning experience.

Do your best in all the tests. After returning home, analyse your performance. Adequate practice will give you the knowledge to make informed decisions — for example, you will realise attempting a reading comprehension question might not be a good idea if you only have a few minutes left before the test ends.

Answer questions depending on your level of confidence on the topics, rather than the feasibility of the answers.

For example, take a data interpretation question based on the average runs scored in a cricket series by major players. Sometimes, CAT aspirants try to save time by partially solving the problem and basing their answers on personal biases — like Tendulkar would have the highest score or Dravid might have the best average score or something to this effect.

The actual answer, based on the information given in the test, might be completely different. Maybe a bowler would have the highest score. Though this might be not practically feasible, the questions in the CAT paper need not have logical solutions as far as data interpretation is concerned.

Making a guess of this kind would not come under the purview of intelligent guessing. Intelligent guessing should be done in topics in which you have a sufficient level of expertise obtained as a result of extensive practice; it should not be done for questions where your answers need to be based on the information given in the question paper.

v. You should be careful not to repeat the mistakes made you made in either the mock CATs or while practising at home. Make it a point to take a couple of tests every week from now on.

vi. Set a goal while revising or studying the CAT preparation material.

Here is an example of what I mean. If you have planned to study for two hours, you should also know what you hope to achieve at the end of those two hours. This will help you focus your effort. By setting a goal, you will achieve much more in those two hours.

Are you good at group discussions?

vii. As I had mentioned earlier, CAT is all about strategy. There are many talented people who have given this exam but have not got admission into the IIMs. One of the major differences between these people and those who made it to the IIMs is that the latter had learnt to maximise their result in the two hours allotted to CAT.

They knew all sections were equally important and should, ideally, be given equal time unless you are exceptionally weak in a section.

viii. Coming to the paper, you should look at accuracy as a priority. Adequate practice will help you increase your speed at a later stage of preparation, but absence of accuracy will lead to widely varying results and not help you get admission in the institution of your choice.

ix. Try and understand why you want to do an MBA. Your reasons should be good enough to constantly motivate you during the preparation stage. You should also inculcate the habit of reading regularly.
Why do you want an MBA?

x. Lastly, flexibility matters.

One can have a strategy is place, but it may not work for you during the actual exam. You should always have a fallback plan. One particular section in the paper might be particularly difficult or you may find two sections have been merged into one. Such possible combinations should be analysed; you should also have a strategy ready in case you are faced with such a scenario.

Focus on improving your strategy during the month of September. Use the months of October and November to work on the speed at which you answer questions accurately.

Before giving mock tests, ensure you have a good grasp on the various CAT sections; you should be able to attempt at least 80 to 90 questions. This will give you the confidence to sail through CAT!

The candidate must hold a Bachelor’s Degree, with at least 50% marks or equivalent CGPA [45% in case of the candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC) / Scheduled Tribe (ST) or Persons with Disability (PWD) category], of any of the Universities incorporated by an act of the central or state legislature in India or other educational institutions established by an act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a University under Section 3 of UGC Act, 1956, or possess an equivalent qualification recognized by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India. The Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent qualification obtained by the candidate must entail a minimum of three years of education after completing higher secondary schooling (10+2) or equivalent. The percentage obtained by the candidate in the bachelor’s degree would be based on the practice followed by the university/institution from where the candidate has obtained the degree.
In case of the candidates being awarded grades/CGPA instead of marks, the equivalence would be based on the equivalence certified by the university/institution from where they have obtained bachelor’s degree. In case the university/institution does not have any scheme for converting CGPA into equivalent marks, the equivalence would be established by the IIMs by dividing obtained CGPA with the maximum possible CGPA and multiplying the resultant with 100.

Candidates in the final year of bachelor’s degree/equivalent qualification and those who have completed degree requirement and are awaiting results can also apply. Such candidates must produce a certificate from the Principal/Head of the Department/Registrar/Director of the university/institution certifying that the candidate is currently in the final year / is awaiting final results and has obtained at least 50% marks or equivalent (45% in case of candidates belonging to SC/ST/PWD category) based on latest available grades/marks.

Eligibility for Post Graduate Programmes in Management of IIMs

The candidate should meet CAT 2008 eligibility as detailed above. A candidate who is in the final year of bachelor’s degree/equivalent qualification, if selected, will be allowed to join the programme provisionally only if he/she submits a certificate latest by June 30, 2009 from the Principal/Registrar of his/her college/institute (issued on or before June 30, 2009) stating that the candidate has completed all the requirements (the results may, however, be awaited) for obtaining the bachelor’s degree/equivalent qualification on the date of issue of the certificate. The admission will be confirmed only when the candidate submits the mark sheet and a certificate of having passed the bachelor’s degree / equivalent qualification referred to in the certificate issued by the Principal/Registrar with at least 50% marks (45% in case of candidates belonging to SC/ST/PWD category). The deadline for submission of the mark sheet and the certificate is December 31, 2009. Non-fulfilment of this condition will automatically result in the cancellation of the provisional admission. IIMs would not allow any candidate to join their programme in case the candidate is unable to complete all the requirements for a bachelor degree on or before June 30, 2009. The IIMs would also not offer admission to any candidate after June 30, 2009.
